British CNC machine tools company NCMT is to sell a new set of air turbine spindles created by BIG Daishowa.
The new CNC systems, which are aimed at allowing for high cutting speeds for metal removal and good tool life for very small diameter cutters, can operate at high speed, with the RBX5 working between 30,000 and 50,000rpm and the RBX7 functioning at 60,000 to 80,000rpm.
The maximum static total indicated run-out is just one micron at the collet nose, according to the company, whereas the dynamic run-out is four microns at 80,000rpm, "a combination of precision and speed that is impossible using gear or belt-driven spindle speeders due to the vibration and heat that they generate," NCMT adds.
Compressed air is delivered through a stop-block installed on the spindle face which powers the turbine, allowing the spindle to be exchanged automatically to and from the tool magazine, meaning micro-machining and metal cutting can be carried out in an uninterrupted cycle.
NCMT was founded in 1964 and is the sole agent for a number of Japanese companies, such as Makino, EDM and Okuma.
